@LU_SPAD Students Enjoy a Night Out at the Subway Super Series

268On Monday November 25th, 2013, a group of SPAD students attended the Subway Super Series, which for the first time was taking place in Sudbury, Ontario. The Subway Super Series is a series of hockey games taking place between Russian junior players and players representing the three leagues of the CHL; the OHL, the WHL and the QMJHL. The game on the Monday was the 4th game in this years series, and the 2nd game of this years series between Russia and the OHL all-stars.

After the Russian’s took the first match-up between these two teams 5-2 in Oshawa on November 21st, team OHL wanted to even the series in Sudbury. Before a crowd of nearly 4,900 people, including a big section of SPAD students, Russia stole the game with a final score of 3-2 in a shootout. Russia jumped out to a big 2-0 lead after the first period even though team OHL out shot the Russian team 18-5. In the 2nd, the OHL stormed back to tie up the game 2-2. Goals came from the London Knights’ Bo Horvat and the Niagra IceDogs’ Chris Verhaeghe. After both teams were shut out for the remainder of the 2nd, the 3rd and overtime, the teams were forced to end the game in a shootout. After both teams traded goals, the goalies both put on a show before a Russian goal in the 8th round finished the game.

The SPAD students in attendance all had an unbelievable experience at the game. It was a great opportunity to get off of campus and enjoy a high level hockey game with a group of their classmates. Some SPAD students also took part in a few of the side games at the event during the second period and intermission.

Kevin Long, 3rd year SPAD student, was a member of the dance off during the second period where he brought the win home and won himself a set of winter tires. During the second intermission, two third year SPAD students Sean Meyers and Cam Baker took part in the Subway Challenge where they created a sub on the ice. After a tight battle with the opposition, our third year SPAD students were able to bring home the victory.
