How are SPAD and Victoria’s Secret related?

Karen van Hunnik, Director of Marketing for Victoria's Secret & PINK Canada 1993 SPAD Grad

By SPAD Blogger Cole Julien

Karen van Hunnik is a SPAD Graduate (1993) and now is the Director of Marketing for Victoria’s Secret and PINK Canada. On Thursday, March 31st, 2011, Karen came back to Sudbury to visit the SPAD family and share some of her insight, knowledge and even some personal stories about how she got to where she is today.

Karen went from working for the CFL to becoming the Director of Marketing for Victoria’s Secret and PINK Canada. When asked how she went from working in sports to working in the fashion industry she said, “It was my career steps that eventually lead me to where I am today. I started in Canada working for the CFL, then moved to Europe and worked with Footlocker for five years before coming back to Canada working with Footlocker in a management role. Then I worked for the Forzani Group in Calgary for three years before I was recruited by Victoria’s Secret and was given the opportunity to work for them.” This just goes to show hard work can really pay off.

Karen is very modest about her success since graduating but she says her greatest accomplishment so far has been, “being a part of the first expansion of a business, being a part of the Grand Opening of Victoria Secret and PINK in Canada was very special.”

When talking about the SPAD program and some of her favourite memories while she was here, Karen mentioned how SPAD was such a “tight-nit program” and that she has met a lot of SPAD graduates throughout her career. She also said it was the “friendships” she made in SPAD that she will never forget and that she is still in touch with many of her classmates that she met here at Laurentian. “If there was any advice that I could give to SPAD students looking to get into the marketing side of business, it would have to be that the Commerce part of the program is very important and to do well and always keep an open mind.”

On behalf of the SPAD program and family I would like to thank Karen for taking time out of her very busy schedule to come talk to our students and share her stories with us, it was truly a pleasure.
