Are You Ready For Some (Flag) Football: SPAD-style

Flag Football Tournament Organizers

By SPAD Blogger Brianne Pankoff

SPAD held its first official event of the year this past weekend with its annual Flag Football tournament presented by Laurentian University’s Students’ General Association (SGA). The first games of the weekend kicked off at 10 on Friday morning and continued over the next two days on the “SGA” and “Argos” fields until the team left standing could claim bragging rights, and the grand prize of Toronto Argonauts tickets.

New Orleans Pizza provided a lunch to all teams on the first day and other tournament sponsors, Pinnacle Sports, Toppers Pizza, Pizza Hut, The Beach Clothing Company, the Sudbury Wolves, and Buzzy Browns donated prizes to be raffled off and won through the @SPADFLAGFOOTBAL twitter feed, and through several mini games testing the individual skill and athletic prowess of the players, including a QB tire challenge, furthest field goal, and fastest 40 yard dash.

10 teams in total competed in either the Wolves Division or the New Orleans Division, playing a minimum of 4 round robin games with the top 8 teams advancing to the playoffs.

The finals of the Flag Football tournament came down to 2011 tournament champs, TD’s and Beers against the underdog Favre Dollar Footlong, consisting of 3rd year SPAD students and captained by SPAD Council President Scott Rodgers. Favre Dollar Footlong took a head start with two touchdowns and never looked back playing a strong defensive game, shutting down their opposition, and coming out victorious 35-28. In the end it was the defensive plays that made the difference in this year’s tournament, and Brady Scott was awarded Male MVP of the tournament and Female MVP was won by Cindy Serresse. The winning team, going 7 and 0 for the weekend received 15 tickets generously donated by the Toronto Argonauts to their game vs. the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on October 19th.  Congrats!

2012 Champs

A great weekend was had by all on a beautiful Sudbury weekend.  A special thank you goes out to all participants and everyone who came out, as well as tournament organizers, Cassidy Stewart, Robbie McLellan, Bryce Newton, Mike Taylor, and Kyle Richey, for running an exciting event. With many of the 3rd years off on their internships next year, who will take the title of the 2013 SPAD Flag Football champions?
