This site is home to all information about the BCom SPAD program at Laurentian University. It is managed by the Director of the School of Sports Administration (SPAD), Dr. Anthony Church.

BCom SPAD: The School of Sports Administration awards a Bachelor of Commerce (Sports Administration) degree. It is a limited enrolment (70/year), four-year interdisciplinary professional degree that combines an extensive exposure to the functional areas of business with a practical and theoretical exposure to the sport business.

The key aspects of the BCom SPAD program that continue to attract students are (i) the 560-hour internship in a progressive position with a sport organization (including opportunities for up to two more elective internships), (ii) the annual Consulting Trip, and (iii) the fact that each graduate obtains a Bachelor of Commerce degree with the requisite business skills required by industry today.

SPAD Vision, Mission, and Strategic Goals

Approaching its 50th Anniversary, the School’s vision is to be a recognized source for socially responsible sport business leaders.

The mission of SPAD is to develop and prepare future business leaders for the sport industry through an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, industry integration, experiential learning, and innovative scholarship.

In pursuing its vision and mission, SPAD has established a number of strategic goals:

  1. To acquire and maintain the resources and infrastructure necessary to provide students with a high degree of engagement with professors and industry partners.
  2. To explore new areas of specializations, minors, undergraduate and graduate degree offerings, and curriculum options.
  3. To foster an active research environment, including infrastructure and partnerships, such as that with the Institute for Sport Marketing, for all faculty members, in order to produce industry-relevant, and academically significant, work.
  4. To pursue relevant accreditations.
  5. To maintain the School’s strategic advantage in the marketplace as the only undergraduate sport management business degree in Canada.

 

BCom SPAD Program Goals

In alignment with the overall School vision, mission, and goals, the Bachelor of Commerce (SPAD) program has specific goals, which include:

  1. To maintain a select entry admissions process to ensure that only top qualified students are admitted to this signature program; thereby, contributing to the University’s strategic goals of national recognition and being a university of choice.
  2. To maintain and enhance the experiential learning opportunities synonymous with the history of our Bachelor of Commerce in Sports Administration education.
  3. To constantly monitor industry trends and have them reflected in a modern curriculum.

 

BCom SPAD Learning Objectives

With an eye towards the kind of graduate the School wishes to produce, we have developed specific learning objectives that assure our graduates future success in the industries of their choice. These learning objectives include:

  1. Our graduates will use ethical reasoning skills.
  2. Our graduates will be able to apply business concepts to the sport industry.
  3. Our graduates will be effective oral communicators.
  4. Our graduates will be effective written communicators.
  5. Our graduates will be critical thinkers and problem solvers.
  6. Our graduates will work effectively in groups and within teams.
