SPAD Heats up the Sudbury Winter

Suitcase_pic 1By SPAD Blogger Benoit Roy

Just when the weather in Sudbury started to dip below -40°C and the spirits of SPAD students began falling like the heavy-packed snow on campus, a much needed dose of heat was added by the 2013 SGA Suitcase Party presented by Breakaway Tours.  Organized by third and fourth year SPAD students, Liam Dougherty, Alex Foeller, Sam Gibson, Trent McCrory, and Patrick Robertson, the beach-themed SGA Suitcase Party was held on the evening of January 19, 2013 and played host to over 300 LU students.  The event plays on the old style of a suitcase party where attendees would actually bring suitcases full of prizes in the middle of winter, and the grand prize winner would be sent on vacation the same night.  A few things have changed since then, but the spirit of the SGA Suitcase Party resembles its original concept, with a grand prize presented by Breakaway Tours: a FREE trip voucher to (hopefully) someplace warm.  In past years, the SGA Suitcase Party has been held at the Pub Downunder, but this year’s venue, the Alumni Hall, allowed the event organizers to take advantage of its size and space.  With DJ service provided by DJ Animo and a of couple licensed bartenders, the traditional pub scene was transformed into a modern party atmosphere.  Surely, this transformation was a warranted change.

Regardless, some things never change.  The array of prizes available were quite extensive and contributions were made by supporting sponsors Red Bull, Eddie’s Restaurant, New Orleans Pizza and Bianco’s Supercenter, among other partners.  Amidst the flurry of available prizes, the top prizes were comprised of a Blackberry Playbook and a 43-inch plasma TV provided by Bianco’s Supercenter and the winners were Dr. Claude Vincent and fourth-year student Keith Martin respectively.  The ultimate grand prize of a FREE trip voucher contributed by Breakaway Tours was won by first-year student David Maika.

According to event organizer and SPAD Student Council SGA Representative, Liam Dougherty, “the Suitcase Party went very well for the organizers from sponsorship, to planning, to set up, and finally, the execution of the event.  We had a great time throughout the process and would like to thank everyone who bought a ticket – all 342 of you who came out to party.”  Despite the cold, Laurentian students can appreciate a temporary relief from an unkind Sudbury winter with the prospect of being sent to the tropics for free; the SGA Suitcase Party presented by Breakaway Tours offered that relief, even if it was just for one night.

SPAD Hockey Tournament: Huge Success For All – No CBA Needed

Puck Drop

By SPAD Blogger Benoit Roy

The much anticipated 38th annual Laurentian University SPAD Hockey Tournament was held this past week and played host to some exciting playoff finishes in both the Mixed and Competitive Divisions.  On Friday January 25, round robin play ended and the playoffs began after the final game between 1st year SPAD team, Morning Sherwoods, and 3rd year SPAD team, Royale with Cheese in the Mixed Division.  After a tightly contested first and second period, Royale with Cheese pulled through scoring 3 goals in less than 10 minutes to finish the game 4-1 despite spectacular play by 1st year goaltender, Jessica Inch who battled through an injury.  Ultimately, Royale with Cheese advanced to the semi-finals to face off against the Puckin’ Beauties.  The two teams met prior toMixed Winners this semi-final game with the Beauties beating Royal with Cheese handily by a score of 6-1, but the semi-final brought forth some animosity and passion that carried over from their last meeting.  Ultimately, the game finished 1-0 in favour of the Beauties who moved on to meet Wheel Snipe No Dome in the finals; Wheel beat the Red Devils 2-1 in their own semi-final match to advance to the championship game.  The Mixed Division final was another close contest with Wheel Snipe No Dome and the Puckin’ Beauties exchanging the lead twice in what was an eventual Wheel victory after taking a late third period lead.  Congratulations to Wheel Snipe No Dome on being the 2013 Laurentian University SPAD Hockey Tournament Mixed Division Champions.

The Competitive Division playoffs followed a similar story with close semi-final games between Off to Men and Comp Winnersthe V.E. Rebels, and the Muckers and the Dirty Birds.  The first game was an extremely close affair with Off to Men finishing ahead of the Rebels in a final score of 1-0 to advance to the Competitive Division Finals.  The latter game finished 4-0 for the Muckers who saw their offensive and net-minding performance come through strong in the all-important match.  In the final game, the Muckers and Off to Men rallied through three periods but the game finished 0-0; the overtime period did not solve anything so the teams were off to a shootout! Despite the Muckers valiant effort and solid offensive and defensive contributions through tournament play, the clinching goal was scored by Off to Men who were crowned the 2013 Laurentian University SPAD Hockey Tournament Competitive Division Champions. Congratulations!

The tournament also featured the fight for University-wide bragging rights in the annual LU Staff versus LU Faculty game. With Staff-Faculty gameLaurentian University President Dominic Giroux on hand to drop the ceremonial puck, the game started off as a rugged and heated battle with end-to-end action and some great early saves. By the time the third period rolled around, age and fitness levels became apparent as a seesaw battle ended in a 6-4 victory for the Faculty team. The Faculty team’s first victory in years was celebrated with a round of defibrillators and oxygen tanks for all.

The 2013 Laurentian University SPAD Hockey Tournament organizing team would like to thank all the volunteers and individuals who lent their services during the week – it was certainly appreciated.  The tournament organizing team would especially like to thank their sponsors for being a part of another very successful and entertaining SPAD Tournament!:  Laurentian University, Rewind 103.9 FM, Hot 93.5 FM, SGA/AGÉ, Doghouse Sports Bar and Eatery, Doyle’s Marketplace, Laurentian University Faculty of Management, Skater’s Edge Source for Sports, Laurentian University Printing Services, Plexman Dentistry, Topper’s Pizza, Pinnacle Sports, The Keg Steakhouse and Bar, Gloria’s Restaurant, Barrydowne Family Chiropractic Clinic, Gagnon Opticians, Southridge Mall, and Marble Slab Creamery.
