By SPAD Blogger Adam Johnston

Gatorade & the SPAD Cup - Great Combo!!

The highly anticipated SPAD flag football tournament kicks off on Friday, September 29th at 11:30.  This year the field is wide open with the defending champs, choosing to not defend their title. Twelve teams are competing for the prestigious title, and of course the bragging rights that come along with it. Live results will be tweeted by @SPAD_football.

The winning team will also enjoy what is sure to be a tame weekend in Toronto on October 21st and 22nd. The grand prize includes tickets to the Toronto Argonauts game on the 21st as well as free entry into Rockwood nightclub in downtown Toronto.  Other prizes include a Toronto Argonauts autographed football, Buzzy Browns gift certificates and many other great prizes.

There will also be a quarterback challenge that is sure to test the ego of many in between games during the championship.  Contestants will see how fast they can complete the obstacle course, which will test both footwork and the throwing accuracy.

The tournament will come to an end with the championship game played under the lights at 8:00 PM on Saturday. All are invited to come watch the game as well as all other games in the tournament.

SPAD Teeing Off – Relaunch of the @LU_SPAD Alumni Golf Tournament

By SPAD Blogger Andrew Berlingeiri

SPAD Alum Tom Dixon's Ceremonial Tee-Off

The weather could not have been more perfect for the first SPAD Alumni Golf Tournament since 2008. The event took place at the beautiful Shawneeki Golf Club in Newmarket, Ontario. SPAD Alumni Tom Dixon started the tournament with a ceremonial tee off, and from there on it was game time for all SPAD golfers. The day consisted of many ups and downs, celebrations and frustrations and fierce competition. When the scorecards had come in and were finalized it was determined that there was a tie score of nine under between a threesome and a foursome. The threesome of two alumni Mike Leblanc and Mike Ondevilla along with Cole Julien had tied the foursome of Chris Ackroyd, Andrew Berlingieri, Mike Fleetham and Brent Hurley. In order to determine a winner the two groups went to a putt-off with the threesome proving to be victorious. Congratulations to the winners of the 2011 SPAD Golf Tournament, Mike Leblanc, Mike Ondevilla and Cole Julien.

The Winning Team

The Second Place Team

Throughout the day there were also other competitions that took place. Cole Julien and Melissa Bouffard won longest male and female drive, Andrew Kooren and Melissa Bouffard won closest to the pin, and Mike “Big Mike” McMurray won the putting contest. Best Dressed Male went to John Febrarro and Best Dressed Female went to the foursome of Dana Bateman, Julia Bateman, Melissa Bouffard and Kendra Lily. Last but not least, the prize for the most honest score went out to the SPAD Faculty Team of Anthony Church, Past Director Kit Lefroy, Ann Pegoraro and Claude Vincent.

Once the winners of the tournament and contest had been decided the golfers headed inside the clubhouse for a nice steak dinner provided by the course. After dinner raffle prizes and a live auction took place. All proceeds raised will go towards this year’s Fourth Year Sport Consulting Trip to Denver Colorado.

The tournament committee did a tremendous job and the event was very well organized and executed. On behalf of SPAD I would like to thank everyone who participated and thank all the sponsors who helped make the tournament possible. I look forward to seeing all of you next year.

Conway Fraser & Todd Robson Provide SPAD Students with Food for Thought.

By SPAD Blogger Andrew Leach

Dr. Xiaoyan Xing’s sport media and communications class was pleased to welcome Mr. Conway Fraser and Mr. Todd Robson to the classroom last week. This opportunity allowed for the 3rd year students to gain first hand insight into the media industry, as well as learn some tips that can help them succeed in possible future career paths.

Conway Fraser

Firstly, Conway Fraser is a well-known public relations professional and a media strategy expert. Some of his career highlights include positions as both journalist and producer for the CBC, as well as the president of Fraser Strategies Inc. Our second guest, Todd Robson, is a leading figure in the Northern Ontario news world. As CTV news producer, Robson has been helping bring news from across the country to the Sudbury region for numerous years as well as help to keep a strong sense of community in the Greater Sudbury area by supplying residents with the local stories which affect their daily lives.

Between the two speakers, the SPAD students were able to gain some valuable information about the media, and how to keep them happy. One point emphasized by the pair was – feed the media – literally! They also offered some words of warning for anyone entering the public relations or media industries, “never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel. “ These revelations were obtained through years of experience in the field, and thanks to @ConwayFraser and  @ToddRobson , the students in SPAD are now able to enter internships and careers with inside knowledge which will help them along their paths.

On behalf of the SPAD community we would like to once again thank Mr. Fraser and Mr. Robson for sharing their valuable experience with the students and helping the SPAD brand become continually stronger.

SPAD Wear is Back!

By SPAD Blogger Adam Johnston

SPAD Wear Line 2011-2012

SPAD Wear is back and better than ever! The apparel available this year is from Reebok and offered in many different styles. The clothing is great quality and is being sold at less than retail price!!

For the first time ever SPAD is offering a women’s line. Available on the women’s line this year are a hoodie, a short-sleeve T-shirt, a polo and a jacket. The four items are being sold individually as well as through a bundled package. The bundle is the best deal as it is selling for the low price of $125, which is over an $80 under retail value.

In order to be able to sell the women’s line, 36 pieces of each article need to be sold. What this means is that every woman in SPAD need to be buying SPAD wear as well as the men in the program should be buying SPAD wear for their mothers, sisters, girlfriends and wives.

For the men, the basics are being sold again this year including a T-shirt; long sleeve T-shirt, Polo, hoodie and tracksuit. This year a fitted Reebok mesh back hat is being sold. Like the women’s line the men’s line is priced to sell!

If you want to be part of the team you have to wear the uniform. SPAD wear has become the uniform of the program. Whether its in residence, on campus or at the pub, you can instantly recognize a fellow member of your SPAD family because of SPAD wear.

Come on out to the great hall on Friday September 22nd from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM to get a look at this year’s SPAD wear and sizes that are being offered.

SPAD Frosh Day – Welcome to the Family!

By SPAD Blogger Andrew Berlingieri

SPAD Frosh 2011

With another year on the rise, the SPAD student council held its annual Frosh Day for the first year students to get to know each other. The day began with introductions from the council, followed by introductions from the frosh explaining where they were from and an embarrassing story to help break the ice. Following introductions the frosh headed to the soccer fields for pizza and pop. While waiting for lunch council kept the frosh occupied with a couple of competitive team-building exercises. Once lunch had arrived and was finished the frosh pilled onto the classic yellow school bus and headed to Dodge This! paintball field in Garson, Ontario.

The athleticism of the first year SPAD students was put on display with two games of paintball. The first game, which was capture the flag, took place in the forest, offering a natural setting feel. The second game took on the main field where players used the props set up as cover. Many of the frosh were covered in paint and came off the field bruised from battle. The frosh again piled on the bus and headed back to campus where the council had organized a barbeque to assist the frosh in getting to know the upper year students and their faculty.

The barbeque took place at the Ken Bahnuk Lounge, located near the Ben Avery Gymnasium. There the first year students had the opportunity of meeting upper year students and ask them questions. The frosh also had the opportunity to meet Director Dr. Ann Pegoraro, SPAD Faculty members Dr. Anthony Church, Dr. Claude Vincent, Dr. Xiaoyan Xing, and SPAD Secretary Lynn Levac. The students also had the privilege of meeting a well-known economics professor Dr. Byron Eastman. Everyone in attendance enjoyed burgers, hotdogs, pop, and chips, as well as a cake to celebrate yet another beginning to a year full of new students. On behalf of SPAD Council, and the SPAD program, I would like to welcome the SPAD frosh to their new family for the next 4 years.
