SPAD Xmas Party: SPAD gives back

By SPAD Blogger Lukas Hayes

SPAD Gives Back

This past Saturday, December 11th, 2010, SPAD students gathered in the games room on campus to partake in a Christmas gathering. Sometimes SPAD events are just seen as ways for the program to raise money, however this was not the case for SPAD Xmas. Students flocked to the games room to see the coveted rivalry game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Each student was encouraged to bring a food item for the Sudbury Food Bank, and the people attending did not disappoint. There were a variety of decorations and even some homemade baking by students Nicole Fraser, Shannon O’Reilly and Kat Schnieder. The game had multiple highlights and had students shouting jests at each other regarding their favorite teams. The party was jersey themed and SPAD students from all years showed up wearing their favorite team’s colors. In total, the event raised 37 items for the Sudbury Food Bank. After the game, the UFC fight was scheduled to air. With some help from residence and SPAD’s good friend Michael Wallace, we were able to order the fight. SPAD ran the event and collected $3 for each person attending to cover both the ordering fee, and to contribute towards Airbandz, which focuses on donating to cancer research. Over $100 was raised from students and the money will go to a great cause. A big congratulations to all who attended and helped make this Christmas season a little bit better for people in need. Happy Holidays!!

SPAD and Movember – A Hair Raising Success

The End of Movember: Reuben relieves Lukas of his contribution

As mentioned in a early story by SPAD Blogger Brent Hurley, SPAD Fellas totally embraced Movember – the month formally known as November, when boys and men worldwide started growing moustaches in support of the fight against prostrate cancer.

SPAD students were seen all around campus with unnecessary hair on their upper lips, which to most professors, including myself, was very discerning in a classroom. How could you take one of these young men seriously with such strange growth on their upper lips? But seeing as how it is all in support of a good cause, we all supported it. I am happy to announce that with the close of November so came the shaving of the moustaches!! SPAD boys and their unsightly facial hair raised close to $200 for Prostate Cancer Research and Canada was the number one country raising over $20 million for the cause. Total funds raisedĀ  worldwide toped $60 million just from Movember. Wow the power of facial hair. Of course, SPAD did not want the women to feel left out and so at the ceremonial shaving event, Brianne Pankoff (SPAD Frosh) was named Miss MovemberĀ  – which I am sure has a story behind it.

As always we are proud of SPAD students and their willingness to go that extra “hair” for a good cause.
